daily show with jon stewart." captioning sponsored by comedy central [theme song playing] [cheering and applause] >> jon: welcome to "the daily show." my name is jon stewart. [cheering and applause] our guest tonight, a young man named scott miller. he is the author of a new book on william mckinley's ass. [laughter] i'm going to assume that is "assassination." you got to stop abbreviationing around here, not to say that william mckinley did not have a noteworthy rear end. folks, we are a mere 15 and a half months away from what will definitely be called the most important election of our lifetime. an inveritable herd of republican candidates have already begun the treacherous migratory journey to become their party's nominee. they will need strength. they will need agility. they will need luck. but mostly to survive they will need money, [bleeped] boatloads of money. >> we have the numbers behind you. mitt romney $18.4 million. pawlenty $4.4 million. bachmann the same. huntsman $4.2 million. herman cain raised $2.5 million. gingrich $2 million. rick santory um not so much, $500,000
're not going to cut defense spending stance. other candidates, ron paul, jon huntsman are for shrinking the budget. it's about 5%. at the ends of the clinton era it was 3. i think there's tremendous appetite in both parties to lower defense spending. what will republicans offer to democrats in return for getting entitlement reform and they don't want to raise taxes. they might office defense cuts. >> south carolina senator senator graham can't imagine a republican running to the left of president obama on defense policies. but i think it's really hard to see what is the emerging worldview coming from this sets of republicans but they've been freed by the fact there's a democrat in the white house to be critical of military engagements but haven't defined where they would get involved and what they would do without that. >> what do you think? >> two prisms. one is operational. draw down afghanistan and the war in iraq. that saves money. the other one is repetitive systems. the f35, there was a dual engine, in the projects 15, 20 years. it was killed in the 2011 budget deal. john boehner
hampshire, pennsylvania. former massachusetts governor mitt romney and jon huntsman will be at the amherst 4th of july parade. romney is slated to walk ahead in the first section of the parade with huntsman in a later group pentagon. that order was only determined by the date when the candidate applications were received. so no innuendos. >> nothing to read into that. >> exactly. meanwhile, congressman michele bachmann who has been on a tour of iowa the entire weekend, as well as former house speaker newt gingrich, are scheduled to participate in the clearlake july 4th parade in iowa. and herman cane will end his day in new hampshire. he's going to throw out the first pitch for the new hampshire fisher cats. but he's going to sart off the day in philadelphia if an independence day tea party rally with former u.n. ambassador john bolton. >> pamela, quickly, i saw e-mails yesterday about a new candidate in the race. tell us about who this is. >> yes, we've got another gop presidential candidate to add to our list. the five-term michigan congressmaned that use mccotter announced on kat at the w
as well. tim pawlenty, 3%. jon huntsman, who has staked a lot of his campaign on winning new hampshire and had this big rollout with a lot of media coverage, only at 2% at this point. he is right there with herman cain and newt gingrich. surprising numbers there and very good numbers for mitt romney. we mentioned in that poll there, tim pawlenty, he also is not doing very well in that poll. he is hoping, obviously, to win iowa where is he staking all of his campaign and brought what is basically a pretty good political young gun on his squad, sarah huckabee sanders, the doubt of mike huckabee, who won the iowa caucuses back in 2008, she has joined his campaign. so you can say that tim pawlenty is looking for some huck luck. and sarah huckabee was a big part of the huckabee campaign and will be a big part of pawlenty's campaign. if pawlenty will do well in iowa, sarah huckabee will be a big bet to help him because right now, he needs all of the help he can get. >> jim acosta, thanks. your next political update in an hour. always get all of the political news 24/7 at cnn/politics.com. >>
